On September 5, 2020, the 6th Chinese Charity and Filial Piety Cultural Festival was held in Hangzhou. As part of the series of activities of the festival, the 2020 Chinese Charity and Filial Piety Role Models Awards Ceremony and the 6th Chinese Charity and Filial Piety Cultural Forum were hosted to set role models of charity and filial piety for overseas Chinese and Chinese people around the world and discuss the elderly care in a post-pandemic era. A total number of 60 role models of charity and filial piety have been selected in the previous five Chinese charity and filial piety cultural festivals. The year 2020 marks the 140th anniversary of Master Hongyi’s birthday. To commemorate this eminent Buddhist master, Yunlin Academy organized a visit to Li Shutong Memorial Hall in Pinghu County, Jiaxing City, for some of its students from the studies of Chinese ancient civilization class. Master Hongyi, whose secular name is Li Shutong, was a pioneer in the New Culture Movement in China. He was also known as an eminent artist, educator, thinker, innovator and the most prominent Buddhist master in modern and contemporary China, who was an exceptional representative of the integration of the Chinese traditional culture and the Buddhist culture. Li Shutong Memorial Hall, located in Pinghu County, was built in 2004. It houses 160 historical artifacts, most of which are autograph letters and calligraphy works of sutra. On the morning of July 22, 2020, the opening ceremony of the Buddhist Chanting Class of Hangzhou Buddhist Academy Music Faculty entrusted by Lingyin Temple was held at Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou. Venerable Master Guangquan, the Vice Secretary-General of the Buddhist Association of China, the Chairman of Hangzhou Buddhist Association, the President of Hangzhou Buddhist Academy and the Abbot of Lingyin Temple, attended and addressed the ceremony. <p style="text-align: justify; margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 5px;"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">On June 6, 2020 (the fifteenth day of the second fourth month in the Chinese calendar), it was customary for the Sangha of Lingyin Temple to traditionally perform the Vassa ceremony at the Mahavira Hall.<br/><br/></span></p><p style="text-align: justify; margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 5px;"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">According to the Buddhist tradition, Buddhist monks should choose a fixed site to earnestly practice Buddhism for three months, starting from the sixteenth day of the fourth month to the fifteenth day of the seventh month in the Chinese calendar. Such a practice is called the Vassa, also known as the three-month Monastic Summer Retreat, or the Buddhist Rains Retreat during the monsoon rains. During the Vassa, the Lingyin Sangha will recite and chant the mahā-vaipulya-buddhâvataṃsaka-sūtra (Huayan Jing, or Huayan Sutra) every day for the benefits of both the living and the dead. On the evening of October 12 local time, a prayer concert featuring Chinese Buddhist chanting music was held at the David Geffen Hall of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, New York City, the United States.
