On February 27, 2015 (9th of the first lunar month), Lingyin Temple held a prayer ceremony of grand offering to the Buddha and celestial beings at the Mahavira Hall. It is one of the most significant ceremonies in Buddhism rituals and a conventional celebration for Lingyin Temple held on the 9th of the firstlunar month every year. Offering to the Buddha means to worship the Three Jewels while offering to celestial beings means to pay respect to the heavenly beings, i.e. the heavenly guardians of Buddhism. Buddhists take refuge in the Buddha, not in celestial beings, and yet they pay respect to celestial beings for celestial beings adhere to the right conduct and virtuous actions and safeguard the Buddha and Dharma according to many written records. This is the origin of grateful offerings to celestial beings. The reason why offerings are held on the 9th of the first lunar month is that the birthday of Sakra (Di Shi Tian in Chinese), the ruler of the Heaven according to Buddhist cosmology, is on this day. In Chinese folk culture, people pay respect to the ruler of the Heaven, also known as the Jade Emperor (Yu Huang Da Di in Chinese) on the 9th of the first lunar month.
